Myopia Control

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Myopia also known as shortsightedness, or in mandarin translated as 近视, is a condition whereby the light/image entering the eyes is wrongly focused, which leads to the elongation of the eyeball (increase in axial length), and causing blurriness in distant objects. Increasing or uncorrected myopia among children, will affect their academic performance and learning process in school. There is also a higher risk of eye diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and retina maculopathy if myopia progresses into high myopia (more than -6.00 diopter).

Based on a research done by our optometrist Mr Darren Toh with Prof. Dr Norhani Mohidin of National University of Malaysia (UKM), the estimated prevalence rate of shortsightedness among schoolchildren (with Chinese ethnicity) in Malaysia is at an concerning rate of 49.4% and will continue to rise in the next 5 years.

WHAT DO WE DO?

At Optika Optometrist,

our optometrist’s main goals in myopia (shortsightedness) management for children is NOT just to correct it with glasses only, NEITHER change new lenses when power increase, but to SLOW DOWN and CONTROL the progression of myopia from becoming too high. Our consultant optometrists Mr.Darren Toh has special interest in myopia control, and in fact is involved in academic research related to myopia control as well.

We provide mainly 3 approaches in controlling and slowing down your children’s myopia:

Optika Optometrist

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

(Also known as Corneal Refractive Therapy) which is an unique contact lens that is worn at night to sleep, and by far the most successful method in slowing down and controlling the progression of myopia.

Aside from myopia control, Ortho-K also offers your child good day time vision without glasses, fantastic for kids with active lifestyle.

Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses

which is a special customized spectacle lenses used to correct your child’s myopia more efficiently taking into considerations of near vision adaptation.

We prescribe and dispense a few types of myopia control spectacle lenses depending on the child’s prescription and vision status after a thorough assessment. To name a few, we prescribe lenses such as Hoya MiyoSmart, Essilor Myopilux, Zeiss Myovision, Kodak Kids, etc.

Myopia Control Disposable Contact Lenses

At Optika Optometrist, we offer an alternative approach in myopia control by using a special daily disposable contact lens called MiSight.

MiSight is developed by Cooper Vision and uses ActivControl Technology to allow children to see clearly and slow down their myopia (shortsightedness) progression and eyeball growth.

MiSight is specifically targeted for children who are not a good candidate for Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) but wanted a solution which is more effective than myopia control spectacle lenses.
